WORLD MACHAL - Volunteers from overseas in the Israel Defense Forces

Shmuel (Fritz) Daks

Shmuel DaksThe son of Avraham and Pearl, Shmuel Daks was born in Vienna, Austria, on 25th February 1925. He completed elementary school in 1939 and was later sent to England with the Kindertransport, shortly prior to the outbreak of World War II.
During the war, as a refugee in the UK, he spent time at three different locations.

He volunteered for Israel’s War of Independence and arrived together with other Machal volunteers.  He took part in actions in the Galilee as a member of the English-speaking “B” Company of the 72nd Infantry Battalion of the 7th Brigade.

Shmuel Daks fell at Meron on 29th October 1948, at the beginning of Operation “Hiram,” aimed at pushing the Arab Liberation Army over the Lebanese border, thus freeing the Galilee.  He was buried on the same day at the Rosh Pina military cemetery.
