WORLD MACHAL - Volunteers from overseas in the Israel Defense Forces

Shlomo Danino

Shlomo DaninoThe son of Raphael and Chana, Shlomo Danino was born in Meknes, Morocco, and studied at the Talmud Torah and then at the Kol Israel Chaverim school.    He learned the trade of shoemaking and subsequently worked as a cobbler.

When Israel’s War of Independence broke out, he could not carry on working in peace and quiet.  He left Morocco with other young volunteers and arrived at the large Haganah training camp near Marseilles in France.  He reached Israel with this group in 1948, and was immediately mobilized into the IDF’s Alexandroni Brigade.

Shlomo Danino was killed in a road accident near Bet Lid on 28th January 1949, and buried in the Netanya cemetery.
