Strictly speaking, I was not Machal. During World War II I married my wife, Leah, while serving in Palestine, December 1944. Previously I had served in India. Firstly as a Company Commander, 2nd Battalion Royal 11th Sikh Regiment. Then DAAQMG (District Assistant Army Quartermaster General) at Brigade Headquarters as Brigade Major of 11th Indian Infantry Brigade, ending up as Lt. Colonel Assistant Army Quartermaster General of 4th Indian Division. Returning to England at the end of the War, after a while I found I could not settle down, and we returned to Palestine in March 1947. Later in 1947, I was asked to lecture to senior members of the Haganah on the composition and formation of an army, and subsequently carried out various duties prior to the outbreak of the war. During the war I headed the Staff Duties Branch at General Headquarters, also served as Inspector General of the Air Force, and then Quartermaster General of the Army. I subsequently settled back in the U.K.
