WORLD MACHAL - Volunteers from overseas in the Israel Defense Forces

Meir Dahan

The son of Albert and Saida, Meir Dahan was born in Casablanca in Morocco on 3rd March, 1927. When he learned about Israel’s War of Independence, he left home and the land of birth, and volunteered for the IDF.

He joined the Alexandroni Brigade and participated in battles in the south.  In Operation “Horev,” a campaign to eliminate the Egyptian Brigade from the “Faluja Pocket,” the attack was carried out on the eastern flank of the “Pocket” in the area of Iraq-el-Manshiya.

The Alexandroni forces broke through to Kfar Madrom and took control of part of it, but the assault on the northern hill of the settlement was unsuccessful.  Meanwhile, the Egyptians recovered and resisted the attack.  Some of the forces were trapped within the settlement.  In this attack on 28th December 1948, Meir Dahan was killed.

He was buried at Faluja.  His body was later re-interred at the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery in Tel Aviv.
