Jacques Hazoui, the son of Shosh and Robida, was born in Meknes in Morocco on 17th August 1948. After completing his schooling he was employed as an office clerk. In his teens he loved Zion and when Israel’s War of Independence began, he was mobilized in the Diaspora. He managed to overcome the difficulty of leaving Morocco, and reached Israel at the height of the war in the summer of 1948.
He served in Jerusalem with the Palmach, and played a part in its defense by working on fortifications. He had a cheerful disposition and sang songs of his homeland.
While digging on the fortifications at Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, he was seriously wounded by a Jordanian shell, and taken to the Bikur Cholim Hospital, where he died of his wounds on 10th October 1948. He had only been in Israel for three months.
He was buried at Sheikh Badar “A” and on 30th August 1950 he was re-interred at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl.
