The son of Hirsch and Miriam, Hans Gluzman was born in Duisburg, Germany, on 22nd December 1923. Before Hitler’s ascent to power, the family moved to Charleroi in Belgium where he completed elementary school, and later studied ladies’ hairdressing.
During World War II he was active in the Belgian underground in its fight against the Nazis and later crossed the border into France. After the war he returned to his occupation as a hairdresser, and was also active in the Jewish National Youth movement as deputy chairman of the “Maccabi” organization in his city.
In 1948 he volunteered to participate in Israel’s War of Independence, and arrived with a group of Machal volunteers. He served in the Harel Brigade of the Palmach.
He was killed in battle at Dir-Ibn near Jerusalem on 29th September 1948, and was buried in the cemetery at Kibbutz Kiryat Anavim.
