Fearing the German invasion, he and his brother fled, and were evacuated to the town of Rennes in the Bretagne region and later moved to Nice, where the children were hidden in a Christian home. He was employed in the office of L’Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants (OSE) in Paris and prepared for his immigration to Eretz Israel.
When he heard about Israel’s War of Independence, he volunteered. He arrived in the summer of 1948 and had a brief training period. He was sent to the Negev, where he joined the French Commando Company of the 9th Battalion of the Palmach Hanegev Brigade, and took part in Operation “Horev” in the attack on Bur Asluj and Auja-Al-Hafir.
