The consecration of the memorial was held at the Yom Hazikaron ceremony at the Israeli Embassy on 11 May 2016
in the grounds of the Embassy of Israel in Pretoria
The monument was paid for by generous donations from mainly annonymous donors. When the news became public that 87 South Africans had been killed in the defence of Israel various ideas were considered to honour them and their families and the Ambassador and his staff decided on the memorial to be erected at the Embassy to show solidarity between Israel and the South African fallen and their families.
