WORLD MACHAL - Volunteers from overseas in the Israel Defense Forces

Avraham Geller

Avraham GellarAvraham Geller, the son of Zvi and Malo, he was born in Zubovska in the Vahalin region of Poland on 16th September 1924.  When he was eight- years-old his family emigrated to Montevideo in Uruguay. He received an academic education in a Jewish atmosphere.

He was a member of the Young Zionist movement, and prepared himself for the future by working on a farm. He joined Uruguay’s navy, hoping to eventually immigrate to Eretz Yisrael and work as a sailor.  He arrived in Israel in July 1948.

Because of the war he put off his plan to join a kibbutz and joined the Palmach.  He was posted to Beit-Lid and Sarafand, but requested a transfer to a combat company in order to play a more active role in the war.

On 5th October 1948 he and four comrades were murdered by Egyptians at their post east of Kibbutz Ruhama, near Kibbutz Mishmar Hanegev.

He was buried at Kibbutz Mishmar Hanegev, and on 15th November his body was re-interred at the Nachlat Yizhak military cemetery.
