Wilfred Sheppard, the son of Ernst and Rosa, was born in Vienna, Austria on 22nd November 1922. He arrived in England as a refugee in 1938, and two years later he completed his high school education with excellent grades. Literature was a subject at which he was particularly gifted, and at the age of 16 he wrote an essay on the Development of Drama.
During World War II he volunteered for the British Intelligence Service. After his discharge he tried to enroll at university, but was unsuccessful. He was also unable to find suitable employment in civilian life.
Arriving in Israel in June 1948, he volunteered to fight in Israel’s War of Independence. He was posted to the 72nd Infantry Battalion and while based at Camp Fylon was killed in a shooting accident on 26th December 1948.
He was laid to rest at the Rosh Pina military cemetery, within walking distance of Camp Fylon.
