WORLD MACHAL - Volunteers from overseas in the Israel Defense Forces

Jacques (Jack) Shulman

Jacques ShulmanThe son of Noel and Sophia, Jacques Shulman was born in Paris, France on 14th January, 1928.  As a youth he emigrated with his family to the U.S.A., settling in New York where he completed three years at High School.  He served in the U.S. military as an instructor for eighteen months.

He was profoundly affected by the British White Paper restricting the rights of his people to enter Eretz Yisrael. He joined the French Commando Company of the 9th Battalion, Palmach Hanegev, participating in numerous actions.  The French Commandos were the first to fight their way into Beersheva during Operation “Yoav.” He was killed there on 21st October, 1948.

He was finally laid to rest at the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery on 11th August, 1949.
